About Our Founder
Skipper Mphahlele
I was born and raised in Kathlehong, East Rand in Johannesburg, by a single parent with five children. As the firstborn child, I saw my mother struggle to make a comfortable living for us, and it became engraved in my heart and mind that I had to make every opportunity I get count and to also be a great example for my siblings and to the community.
From a very young age I started looking for ways to contribute towards my family's wellness. And in high school my business instincts started kicking in as I secretly sold sweets and snacks, to generate some pocket money and improve my siblings' childhoods. My love for business grew as I faced new challenges, even throughout school holidays, I kept selling at taxi ranks until I finished my Logistics Course at the University of Johannesburg.
Finding the job I needed was one of the biggest challenges I have faced. I found myself too inexperienced and lacking the exposure employers were looking for. And my "small enterprise" was not making enough revenue to sustain me and my family. However, I switched tactics and played to my strengths, to find employment in retail. And although that still didn't pay enough,it put me in the crosshairs of a mentor, who saw value in my abilities to sell. He presented me with a life changing business opportunity in direct sales and marketing, which required a lot of hard work and took up a great majority of my time.
There was a stage, where only I could see the journey I was on; no one in my family believed in what I was trying to achieve- they thought I was throwing my life away. And I was even kicked out of the family house, because I would not change my mind. I overcame the ordeal by taking a hard look at my uncles, family members and the people they surrounded themselves with- their choices and lifestyle represented a vicious cycle of poverty; which I didn't want to get caught up in or pass onto the people I was responsible for.
Within a couple of years my whole life had turned around, and I was setting an example for others. I broke sales records, won a trove of awards including: Most Improved Owner(2018) and Owner of the Year (2021). And I also built my mom a double story house and brought my siblings back together into one comfortable house. I contributed towards my sisters' tuition fees, helped open a small family business and I also got married to the most loving woman. To date I have managed to pass the same opportunity I had to over 12 people in my office.
We live in a society that often overlooks the unique talents and aspirations that our youth possess. I started SMC Marketing as a way to continue making a proper living for my family, and more than that to also be able to invest time, energy and resources towards our youth. To uplift and empower the youth in our impoverished communities and to help them develop the necessary skills to be able change their own lives. Our goal is to close financial services gaps and to help disadvantaged and often excluded individuals to be able to take care of their families and loved ones. We would like to see the youth thrive and look forward to changing the world instead of just worrying about their next meals or the wellness of those they care about.
